Kai Stefan Lothwesen studied musicology, music education and sociology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Magister Artium, 2000). He received his doctorate with a thesis on the reception of new music in European free jazz at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Hamburg (Dr. phil., 2006) and habilitated at the University of Siegen with a cumulative thesis on the principles of integrative music research (veni legendi, 2014). His work as a research assistant took him from Giessen via Siegen to Hamburg and Frankfurt (Goethe University, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst); he taught as a substitute professor in Trossingen (winter semester 2012/13), Bremen (2013-2017) and Hamburg (2017-2020).
He has worked as a musician and music teacher (music school “Art of Noise”, now “Musikzentrale”) and as a lecturer for the Goethe-Institut, among others, and was responsible as an editorial assistant in the radio department of Hessischer Rundfunk for series with improvised music and the concert pedagogical accompaniment of the concert series Forum Neue Musik.
Kai Stefan Lothwesen is involved in international professional associations and acts as a reviewer for international specialist journals and publishers in the fields of musicology, music psychology, music education and jazz studies. In his research, he investigates cognitive and social processes of musical creativity and improvisation, socio-historical and stylistic aspects of popular music and jazz, socio-psychological ways of dealing with (popular) music and contemporary music and media usage cultures.
In winter semester 2020/21, he took over the professorship for Systematic Musicology at the State University of Music Trossingen.
