Sebastian Tewinkel, who comes from Unna in Westphalia, first studied school music in Hanover and then conducting with Thomas Ungar at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule. 

After completing his studies, Tewinkel won two important competitions at once: in 2000 he was awarded first (and only) prize at the International Conducting Competition of the Fundação Oriente Foundation in Lisbon and in 2001 the Bad Homburg Conducting Prize.  

Sebastian Tewinkel has appeared as a guest conductor for concerts, CD and radio productions with numerous orchestras: he has conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hanover and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. 

Abroad Sebastian Tewinkel has conducted the Orquestra Metropolitana Lisbon, the St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. 

Recently he has been invited to conduct the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the Hamamatsu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orquestra Ciudad de Granada. 

In the field of music theatre, Tewinkel has conducted Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, the "Magic Flute" in Würzburg, a new production of "Fairy Queen" by Henry Purcell at the Landestheater in Bregenz, and Wagner's "Tannhäuser" at the Theater Hagen. 

From 2002 to 2013 Sebastian Tewinkel was principal conductor of the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra in Pforzheim and from 2009 to 2015 of the Graubünden Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra in Chur. 

Since the winter semester 2010/11, he has also been Professor of Orchestra Conducting at the Trossingen University of Music. 

In 2012 he received the Echo Klassik for the Sony Classical production of cello concertos by Dvorak and Saint-Saens with Maximilian Hornung and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. 

His recent major debuts include the Mannheim National Theatre Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra and the Orquesta Filharmónica de Bogotá. 

He is also committed to promoting young artists and has been principal conductor of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Youth Orchestra since 2018.
