Letizia Viola is a bassoonist from Sicily and lives with her family in Basel. She studied in the concert classes of Milan Turkovic and Sergio Azzolini and was an orchestra academist with the Berlin Philharmonic. From 2002 to 2017 she was deputy solo bassoonist with the Bremen Philharmonic. In recent years she has specialized in playing historical instruments at the Schola Cantorum in the class of Donna Agrell and Pep Borras.
Since 01.10.2017 she has been a research assistant at the FHNW Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in the current project: “Out of the bass register - uncovering the organology, pedagogy, and performance practice of small-sized bassoons from the18thand19th centuries”.
She also teaches historical bassoons at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen and modern bassoon at the Musik Schule der Musik Akademie Basel. She regularly plays with ensembles such as La Cetra Basel, Kammerorchesterbasel, il Pomodoro, la Scintilla, the Baltasarneumann Ensemble, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Freitag Akademie, and others.
