Vita

Anton Steck is known in international circles as an outstanding soloist for baroque violin. In the field of early music, he is regarded as an interpreter who combines high technical perfection with expressive intensity and passion of performance.

After studying the modern violin in Karlsruhe and the baroque violin with Reinhard Goebel in Amsterdam, there followed engagements as concertmaster with Musica Antiqua Köln, the Musiciens des Louvres and, since 2005, Concerto Köln.

Despite all these activities as an orchestra leader, his musical focus is on the interpretation of virtuoso violin literature, which he demonstrates both on stage and on numerous award-winning CD recordings (together with harpsichordist Christian Rieger). In doing so, he transcends the boundaries of conventional playing techniques and challenges not only himself but also his audience. In 2007, Anton Steck produced a Mozart recording together with Marieke Spaans, which was acclaimed by the press. By using an original tangent grand piano, this recording led to a completely new sound image of Mozart's violin sonatas.

As a soloist, Anton Steck works with various orchestras. So far he has made first recordings of the violin concertos of Mozart's contemporary Antonio Rosetti (cpo) and of Antonio Vivaldi ("I Concerti di Sfida" for NAÏVE Paris). The first recording of the only violin concerto by Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries will be released by cpo in 2008.

He has performed as a soloist in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic, The Hague, Wigmore Hall London, Köthen, Florence, Versailles, Tokyo and in the "Frick-Museum" New York.

In 1996 Anton Steck founded the Schuppanzigh Quartet. In addition to the great Viennese quartet literature, the ensemble is also very much dedicated to the discovery of previously unknown compositions. A series of productions is dedicated to the Bonn composer and friend of Beethoven, Ferdinand Ries, whose spectacular quartet works have remained completely unknown until now.

As professor of baroque violin, Anton Steck trains a new generation of young baroque musicians at the State Academy of Music in Trossingen.  Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
