USA Exchange Program

For the students of the Trossingen University of Music, there is the possibility to study at California State University (CSU) or in the Oregon University System (OUS) for one semester or one year. The offer is intended primarily for Bachelor students, but it is open to Master Students as well. Internships, which are integrated into the program at CSU for music designers, can even open the doors to Hollywood.

Study at California State University

California State University is a network of 23 independent universities ("campuses"), while the Oregon University System joins 7 campuses together. Among these, the applicant can choose four campuses and the host university makes the decision about the eventual placement.

The achievements made in the USA ("credits" or LP) will be taken into account upon application for the study at the MHS Trossingen, provided that the learning content does not differ significantly. Recognition takes place after submission of the Transcript of Records upon application to the Examination Office.

It can be interesting for some people, that in addition to the musical subjects at the CSU or OUS, all other subjects can also be taken, for example languages or natural sciences and humanities.

For the time in the USA, you have to apply for leave at the Student Services Office.

Benefits of the exchange program:

  • Support and advice during the application phase
  • As part of the exchange program, the often massive tuition fees of the USA do not apply. We also try to support interested applicants with scholarships for the slightly higher cost of living in the USA and for travel expenses, see page on financing.

Upon application, crediting of achievements made abroad

Application Prerequisites:

  • Proof that travel expenses and living expenses, which are significantly higher in the USA, can be paid. The minimum amount varies by campus.
  • A good result on the TOEFL test (English language test). The minimum requirements differ depending on the campus.
  • Completed application form, transcript of records, admission, letter of motivation, passport that is still valid for 2 years and confirmation of financing from a bank.

Application deadline:

  • Please contact the International Office if you are interested in the USA exchange programme. The application deadline is the end of October / mid-November. Please refer to the notice board and circular mail!

Information for incoming students:

The long-standing exchange agreement between the CSU and OUS and the German state of Baden Wuerttemberg, was opened up to music and other subjects in 1996. Since then this program was expanded to include some of the finest institutions in Baden-Wuerttemberg, and the University of Music Trossingen was selected music partner in Southwest Germany. IP (International Programs) is in a position to facilitate your exchange and arrange details such as transfer credits.

This program allows undergraduate and graduate music students to attend a conservatory-style musical institution for one year. As Trossingen is a purely musical institution, any requirements you may have outside of music cannot be fulfilled here. Musically speaking, however, Trossingen offers a broad spectrum of musical curriculum and all of these credits may be transferred to your CSU or OUS transcripts. Hence, we recommend this program to Juniors who have fulfilled most of their GE requirements.

This program requires at least one year of college-level German at your home campus. In addition the State of Baden Wuerttemberg offers, free of charge, an intensive 6-8 week German course in the summer preceding your exchange. This generally takes place in August-September in Germany.

The costs of this program rarely exceed your normal tuition costs at your home institution. Often, the reasonable housing costs in Trossingen offset the travel costs exchange students incur. If you receive financial aid, you may usually take this with you.

For more information, consult your IP Coordinator in the International Services or Foreign Studies Office on your home campus. Your campus coordinator will guide you through the application procedure.
