- Workshop and Concert on April 1st, 2023 with compositions from his class
Born in Kassel, Germany in 1974, Martin Schüttler works as a composer, performer, and media artist. His aesthetic focus is on the recontextualizing of social, media, performative, spatial, biographical, political, or physical conditions of music. In his compositional practice, he relies on disparate sonority, structural imbalances, and sonic diversity - often interspersed with pop culture references.
Schüttler's work often arises in collaboration with chosen confederates, such as Nadar Ensembles, asamisimasa, hand werk, Ictus, Mosaik, and Trio Catch. He is also a cofounder of the collective stock11 and appears together with Mark Lorenz Kysela in the electronics duo taste. Furthermore, Schüttler's music can be heard by numerous renowned musical ensembles (SWR Vokalensemble, Musikfabrik, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Ensemble Modern, KNM Berlin, Ascolta, Contrechamps) and at international festivals (Warschauer Herbst, musica Strasbourg, Donaueschinger Musiktage, ECLAT, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Wien Modern). His publications, radio broadcasts, lectures, courses, performances, exhibitions and concerts can be heard worldwide.
After his studies in composition and music theory with Nicolaus A. Huber and Ludger Brümmer and the Folkwang University of the Arts, Schüttler was a scholarship recipient at, among others, the ZKM Karlsruhe and the Villa Serpentara. He taught at the HfMdK Frankfurt and at the Philipps University in Marburg. He has been Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart since 2014. Schüttler lives and works in Stuttgart and Berlin.
