Matthias Kowalczyk, born in Bochum in 1988, received his first trumpet lessons at the age of 6 at the music school in his hometown.  At the age of 15 he was already a young student, first at the Robert Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf with Tobias Füller, then he transferred to the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main in the class of Prof. Klaus Schuhwerk, where he began his studies in 2008.

He won the first national prize in the "Jugend musiziert" competition and was a member of several internationally renowned young ensembles, including the "European Union Youth Orchestra".

In 2010, at the age of 22, Matthias Kowalczyk became solo trumpet player in the "Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra". In the years that followed, he made regular guest appearances with renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Orchestra of the Munich State Opera, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg, the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln and the HR Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt. Since 2019 he has been a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra.

During his many years in the orchestra, he has worked with numerous renowned artists, such as Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, Andris Nelsons and Péter Eötvös.

He has performed as a soloist with the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Philharmonie Festiva, the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra and the Mainz Philharmonic State Orchestra, where he was also a scholarship holder in the 2009/2010 season.

He regularly promotes young musicians, for example as a lecturer in the "Landesjugensinfonieorchester Hessen" or the "Landesjugendorchester NRW".
His teaching career began at the Wiesbaden Music Academy, followed by teaching posts at the Basel and Mainz Colleges of Music, where he was appointed honorary professor in 2023.
