A practice-oriented degree programme

Develop your orchestral conducting skills and take advantage of the many opportunities to conduct rehearsals and concerts yourself – either full-time (Master 1) or part-time alongside your career (Master 4).

Diverse offerings in the Master's programme in Orchestral Conducting:

  • Professionalisation of conducting and rehearsal techniques
  • Score analysis
  • Baton technique
  • Development of sound conception and interpretation
  • Examination of complex works from different eras and genres (symphonic music, solo concertos, opera, new music)
  • Rehearsal visits to professional ensembles
  • Option of assistantships

The aim is to enable you to perform artistically demanding concerts with qualified ensembles.

The Master's programme is aimed at anyone with advanced knowledge, ideally through a completed degree in

  • Church music
  • Secondary school education (music)
  • Bachelor's degree in orchestral conducting

The following is what you can expect in the entrance examination:

a) Conducting

  • Conducting (of two pianos) (duration 10 minutes), e.g.: Ludwig van Beethoven: Egmont Overture, bars 1-66; Igor Stravinsky: The Soldier's Tale, No. 1 Marche du Soldat. Active, communicative work with the musicians is expected. Only if this first part of the examination is passed (with a grade of at least ‘particularly suitable’) will parts B and C of the examination follow.

b) Instrument

  1. Instrument (duration: approx. 10 minutes): performance of three works from different eras, including one work from the 20th/21st century
  2. Musical theatre (duration: 10 minutes): performance of an opera scene on the piano with your own singing (marking the vocal part with piano reduction): e.g. Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz: Agathe's scene ‘Wie nahte mir der Schlummer’ bars 1-61 or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Die Zauberflöte: Speaker's scene ‘Die Weisheitslehre dieser Knaben’ bars 39-136
  3. Aural training (oral examination) (duration: approx. 10 minutes): Recognising and singing intervals and chords; naming a harmonic progression; sight-singing; performing a rhythm; ear training (error detection). All tasks are of a high standard.
  4. Colloquium (duration approx. 10 minutes): Topics from: score analysis, repertoire knowledge, instrumentology, music history, form analysis.

c) Rehearsal

  • Rehearsal with the university orchestra (duration 20-30 minutes). The repertoire will be sent two weeks before the entrance examination.
